During WW1, John Maclean, teacher and revolutionary socialist of the Red Clydeside era was considered Public Enemy No1, by the UK government. Imprisoned on numerous occasions for organising public meetings, where he gave impassioned speeches, opposing the war. On 30th November, it will be the centenary of his death, at the age of 44, his body weakened by the brutality of his prison experience. His story was all but eradicated, with no mention of him in Scottish schools, although he had taught at my primary, and attended my secondary school. I wrote this song to pay homage to a fellow alumni. Let history restore the truth, Maclean be known again!
